A Look at the 1997-98 Season

The Lady Knights are looking to make a fresh start with a new coach and in-your-face attitude. "We want to be competitive each night," says Kaneland's new coach Dennis Hanson.

Coach Hanson will try to take advantage of his team's quickness by applying pressure to the ball virtually at all times. "We'll play a pressure type of defense, and try to push the ball up the floor and make some easy shots."

A Review of the 1996-97 Season

The Lady Knights finished the 1996-97 regular season in a bit of a tailspin ending up 7-18 overall, and 2-6 in the conference. The Sophomores on the other hand finished a nice season at 14-9 and 5-3 in the conference. The Freshman ended up 8-11 overall and 4-4 in the conference.

Varsity Lady Knights Basketball

Click Here to review the First Half of the Season ......

Oswego 45 Kaneland 29

Oswego came to Kaneland to start the second half of the girls basketball season like a bunch of bees, playing a swarming defense as they handed the Lady Knights a 45-29 beating. The Panthers' defense never let the Knights up for air in the first half, holding the Kaneland to 2 points in the first quarter and 6 points in the second quarter.

Kaneland had only 2 points in the first quarter and 6 points in the second quarter.

Owsego's press keep the Knights off balance as the home team appeared rusty from their holiday layoff. Offensively the Knights added to their own problems missing what good looks at the basket they did have, making only 9 field goals all night.

"We got off to a slow start," said coach Dennis Hanson. " No one stepped up (for us). They (Oswego) did a good job with the press tonight."

Jamie Zylinski led the Knights with 8 points, Deb Lang had 5 and Mary Richardson 4. Oswego ended the evening at 8-6 as Kaneland dropped to 7-6 for the season.

Batavia 44 Kaneland 33

Batavia visited the charity stripe 30 times while the Lady Knights had only 10 chances (and couldn't convert when they did get there), for a 20-4 point differential as Kaneland suffered it's second home defeat in a row 44-33. The lose left the Knights even across the board at 7-7 for the season and 1-1 for the conference.

The Knights led after one quarter 11-10, but that lasted only briefly into the second quarter as the Bulldogs begin to pull away. By half the Knights trailed 22-17. The Knights came out in the second half and played the Bulldogs even until midway through the final quarter when Batavia opened the gap eventually winning by eleven.

While Batavia's pressuring defense forced the Knights into 18 first-half turnovers (28 for the game), the loss was a moral victory for the Knights as Batavia had blown them out by 29 points in a tournament just a few weeks before.

Knight Centers scored all but 13 of Kaneland's points.

Knight Centers scored all but 13 of Kaneland's points. Senior centers Jamie Zylinski and Karen Pool had 10 points each. No one else had more than 4 points. Stacy Lettow had 5 steals and Zylinski led the Knights with 5 boards.

Geneva 48 Kaneland 30

Geneva scored the first 13 points and the Knights didn't activate the scoreboard until 2:25 was left in the first period. By the end of the first quarter the Lady Knights trailed 19-4. Once the Vikings got into the driver's seat, they were able to maintain a safe cushion the rest of the night for a 48-30 final score.

Down 25-10 with 2:30 left in the first half, the Lady Knights actually had a chance to sneak back into contention. A pair of free throws by Mary Richardson and a Jamie Zylinski basket cut the score to 25-14. But Kaneland missed four straight free threows to end the period a dozen points behind.

Geneva outscored the Knights 13-6 in the third quarter as three Knight regulars sat on the bench. By the time Deb Lang, Stacy Lettow and Addie Saubar reented the game mid-fourth quarter, the final result was already determined. The trio ended up with no points in the contest.

"They just came into our gym and really took it to us," said coach Dennis Hansen.

For the second game in a row the Knight's centers provided most of the scoring, with Jamie Zylinski totaling 8 points and Karen Pool adding 6. Alicia Brown also had 6 points plus seven rebounds.

Coach Dennis Hansen said the team was dispappointed after the loss. It was the Knights third big margin defeat in a row. "I think they ouhustled us and outquicked us," said Hansen.

"They just came into our gym and really took it to us," added Hansen.

Burlington Central 47 Kaneland 34

Burlington Central handed the Kaneland Lady Knights their fourth loss in a row 47-34 in Kanelands first road game of the new year. In their last four games the Knights have lost 45-29, 44-33, 48-30, and 47-34. The teams change, but the results remain the same.

However, there was one difference against Burlington Central - The score after the first quarter. It read Kaneland 9 and BC 7. Then at half the game was still up for grabs as BC held a slim lead 22-20. But the second half was all Central as the Knights could only muster 14 points to BC's 25.

In their last four games the Knights have lost 45-29, 44-33, 48-30, and 47-34.

Meanwhile the Rockets were being led by Cindy Hilbrich who accounted for all but 12 of Central's 47 points.

Kaneland's game was turned inside out as centers Karen Pool and Jamie Zylinski had only 3 points between them. The pair had been the leading scorers over the last few games. Instead outside shooters Jenny Baert stepped up with 9 points, Mary Richardson with 7 and Addie Sauber chipped in with 6. Team leading scorer Debbie Lang had only 4 points giving her a 2 point-per-game average over the last two games.

Pool hit the boards for 6 rebounds and Sauber grabbed 4 more. Meanwhile, point guard Alex Self had 6 assists to go with 4 steals.
