KANELAND  34     PLANO  37
KANELAND  9       SANDWICH  61

Traveling to Sandwich for a wrestling match is something a little different than most first time fans might expect. The gym at Sandwich is small by most school standards but the Sandwich fans make a big noise.

The Knights went to Sandwich Thursday night 01/06/2000 to take on the teams from Sandwich and Plano. After watching the other two schools battle it out, the Knights wrestled Plano first. Dan Aspengren started things off accepting a forfeit at 103 lbs. At 112, John Stralka lost 15-6. At 119, Matt Schoonover and at 125, Tim Morris accepted forfeits. Mike Burch lost by pin at 130lbs. Wrestling against Sandwich can be a real character for any team. Kaneland being full of youth was no exception. The first 5 weight classes were all won by Sandwich and all by pins. KANELAND  52     FREEPORT  27
KANELAND  31     BARTLETT  36
KANELAND  13     DEKALB  57

Tuesday December 21st the Knights traveled to DeKalb High School for a quad meet against the Barbs of DeKalb the Freeport Pretzels and Bartlett High School.

The first dual of the day was against Freeport. Freeport gave up 6 weight classes to forfeits leaving little doubt the Knights would come out victors in this meeting. Robert McGinnis, Chris Cornell, Matt Schiff, Matt McGinnis, and Ed Simonic all won their matches leaving the Knights with a team score of 52 to 27 over Freeport.

Kaneland wrestled Bartlett in the second dual meet. Dan Aspengren defeated his man 15- 7 to start things off right. John Stralka lost by pin at 5:32 after a tough fight. Matt Schoonover pulled off a commanding 9 - 2 win at 119lbs giving the Knights the team point lead at 7 to 6. Tim Morris (125) Mike Burch (130) and Myles Barnett (135) were unable to sustain the Knights lead leaving the score Bartlett 21 Kaneland 7 as we get to 140lbs. Robert McGinnis got Kaneland back on the winning track pinning his opponent. Jenna Hunter accepted a forfeit at 145 lbs. Followed by Chris Cornell pinning his man.

With the score now Kaneland 27 Bartlett 21, Matt Schiff lost at 160lbs 8-2. Matt McGinnis did everything he could to help Kaneland to the win pinning his man for a 6 point team score. Without any wrestlers in the heavier classes Kaneland could only watch as Bartlett accepted forfiets at 189 - 215 and 275 giving them a slim 5 point win. Final score Kaneland 31 Bartlett 36.

Against DeKalb the team competition against wasn't even close. The Barbs swept through Kaneland's first 6 wrestler without much effort. From 103 lbs to 135 lbs only Matt Schoonover managed to stay out of a pin losing 5-0 all 5 others fell to pins.

Robert McGinnis at 140 lbs won a close fight 4 - 2. Chris Cornell at 145 lbs pinned his man and Matt McGinnis won at 171 lbs with a score of 13 - 4. Final score Kaneland 13 DeKalb 57.

PLANO REAPER TOURNAMENT

Friday night and Saturday December,10th and 11th the Knights varsity wrestling team sent 8 wrestlers to what was probably the toughest tournament of the year. Sixteen of the top class A high schools were present.

Matt Schoonover 119lbs
Tim Morris 125lbs

Brandon Mathews 135lbs
Robert McGinnis 140lbs
Chris Cornell 145lbs

When Friday nights preliminary and first rounds were over Kaneland still had 7 of the 8 wrestlers in the hunt for a place on the awards stand.

Chris - 3rd PlaceMike Burch lost twice and was eliminated. Dan Aspengren, Matt Schoonover, Tim Morris, and Brandon Mathews all has byes in the preliminary round and then lost in the first round. All four still could "wrestle back" to a 3rd place finish at this time.

Robert McGinnis pinned his first opponent in the preliminary round but received his first loss of the year getting pinned in the first round.John Stralka and Chris Cornell both had byes in the preliminary round and both won their first round matches leaving them both with a shot at first going into the Quarter Final matches on Saturday.

Saturday morning started with Dan Aspengren getting pinned and being eliminated. Matt Schoonover pinned his man keeping his hunt alive. Tim Morris got pinned and his day was over. Brandon Mathews and Robert McGinnis both pinned their opponents keeping their day moving as well.

Robert - 4th PlaceSaturday afternoon arrived with 5 Knights still fighting along. John Stralka and Chris Cornell suffered their first losses of the tournament. They can still wrestle-back to a 3rd place finish at this point.

Matt Schoonover and Brandon Mathews both lost ending their day. Robert McGinnis won his match 11-4 leaving him a shot at 3rd place as well. All 3 remaining Knights won in their final wrestle-back matches: Robert McGinnis by a score of 7-4,Chris Cornell and John Stralka by pins.

Saturday night brought 3 Knights to the finals. All 3 were going for 3rd place to top off an exciting weekend of wrestling.

Johnson - 4th PlaceJohn got things started for the knights wrestling well at first but ending up getting pinned by a very tough opponent.

Robert McGinnis was matched up against the same man who had pinned Robert friday night in the first round. (Robert's first loss of the year). Unfortunately, the outcome was the same as the night before with Robert getting pinned again, leaving both John and Robert with 4th place finishes.

This is an extremely respectable finish for any wrestler at the PLANO REAPER. Keep in mind John Stralka is only a freshman.

Chris Cornell brought home the highest honor of any Knight beating his man in the finals with a score of 6 - 0. Leaving Chris with a hard fought 3rd place finish.

KANELAND  33     BATAVIA  33
KANELAND  43     BURLINGTON CENTRAL  36

Saturday morning the Knights traveled to Burlington Central to wrestle the rockets and the Batavia bulldogs.

Things continued on Saturday pretty much the way the left off Friday night. The first meet of the day was against Batavia. Our lighter weights still found the going tough against a very strong bulldog team. Except for a couple of wins by forfeit at 112 lbs. and 130 lbs. Kaneland did not get on the winning way until the 145 lbs. match with Robert McGinnis pulling of a dramatic but heart stopping 1-0 win. The knights, turned on by McGinnis' win pinned the next 3 of their opponents in Kaneland style. Chris Cornell continued his trek towards a state bid with a pin in the first period at 152 lbs. followed by Matt Schiff handing his opponent a pin at 160 lbs. topped off by an exciting come from behind pin by Matt McGinnis at 171 lbs.

The Winner!Without having any upper classmen coming out for wrestling in the upper weight classes the Knights continue to have to forfeit the last 3 weight classes to their opponents. This is how the meet against Batavia ended. "I don't mind losing but I want to go down fighting" said Coach Baum.

Things started off better in our second meet on Saturday against Burlington Central. At 103 lbs freshman John Newbolds won a hard fought 17 - 9 win over his man. This match showed that with time and practice John can wrestle with the "big boys".

Things turned a little darker for the next 6 matches with the knights losing 6 straight by pins. Again at 145 lbs Robert McGinnis (undefeated in 5 matches) stopped the bleeding with a pin in the first period. Chris Cornell at 152lbs pinned his man . Matt Schiff at 160 won with a score of 15-7. Matt McGinnis pinned his man at 171 lbs. ,and sophomore Ed Simonic pulled of an exciting pin at 189 lbs.

Coach Baum used 2 freshman wrestlers to stand in at the top 2 weight classes to take forfeits since Burlington had none giving Kaneland its third win in 5 meets.

KANELAND  14     SYCAMORE  58
KANELAND  58     EVERGREEN PARK  14

Kaneland traveled to Evergreen Park Friday night to grapple with the Mustangs and the Sycamore Spartans.

Even with a spirited effort, the youth of Kaneland's wrestling team was evident on Friday night. The first meet of the night found the sycamore team cutting through our first five wrestlers without much effort. The Kaneland Knights bring two freshman, two sophomores, and one junior to the first five weight classes, (103 lbs.- 130 lbs.) unfortunately, three of these wrestlers lost by a pin.

Although the challenge was tough, we found the strength to rise to the occasion and show some Kaneland spirit and tenacity. While Brandon Mathews dominated his opponent in a technical fall, (a victory of more than 14 points) 16-1.

Robert McGinnis won a very tight match, hanging on for a win of 4-2. senior Chris Cornell continued to dominate all in his weight class with a pin against Spartan Tony Sosin, a very strong opponent. senior Matt McGinnis suffered his first loss of the season while getting caught in a throw against a very tough 171 lb. Sycamore Spartan.

Things got much better in the second meet against Evergreen Park. After Evergreen Park forfeited the first two matches to the knights, our wrestlers ran off six straight wins against, what appeared to be, a stunned Mustang team.

While John Stralka (119 lbs.) won his match by decision, 8 - 3, Mike Burch, Brandon Mathews, Robert McGinnis, Myles Barnett, and Chris Cornell won their matches with pins. Matt McGinnis also returned to his winning ways with a pin. Although the knights forfeited at 215 lbs. and 275 lbs. we left with a final score of Kaneland 58 - Evergreen Park 14.

KANELAND  49     WEST AURORA  30

The Knights opened their season with a victory beating West Aurora 49-30. Kaneland won all but three contested matches, victorious in six weight classes. West Aurora forfeited at 103, 125, and 145 pounds, Kaneland forfeited at 215 and 275 pounds.

Coach Baum was pleased with the win. "I was very impressed with how they wrestled. Every one of them. These guys are ready to go."
