KANELAND 1997 STATE QUALIFIERS

In the 1997 IHSA Richmond-Burton Sectional Meet, the following Kaneland Boys Track and Field individuals and relays qualified to compete at the IHSA State Track and Field Meet, held in Charleston, Illinois. In order to qualify for state competition, place finishers were required to place either first or second in their respective event, or perform at a qualifying time or distance (as defined by the IHSA).

Intermediate Hurdles - P.J. Fleck (2nd - 41.2);
Pole Vault - Kurt Long (12' 6") and Marty Kiefer (12' 6");

BOYS TRACK AND FIELD MEET RESULTS

Byron Invitational

In the first track meet of of the year for the boys, Kaneland took 6th place in a 12 team field at the Byron Invitational.

Junior Marty Keifer won the pole vault at 12'6", with sophomore Kurt Long second at 12 feet even. In the 1600-meter relay, Bill McKeown, Shaun Kramer, Joe Reynolds and Paul Aspergren came in second with an impressive 3:50.3. Kaneland also took third in the 800-meter relay and forth in the 3200-meter.

Oregon Meet

The dual meet with Oregon was canceled due to winter-like weather conditions.

Stagg Invitational

The Stagg Invitational was canceled due to freezing weather conditions.

Yorkville, Rockford Christian Life Meet

The Knights scored 106 points to easily defeat Rockford Christian Life (62) and Yorkville (18). Ten first place finshes were awarded for the following events:

Knight Relays

In the third annual Knight Relays, Kaneland boys placed in the top five for all eighteen events.

Morris, Evergreen Park Meet

Kaneland boys track team scored an impressive 109 team points in a triangular meet with Morris and Evergreen Park. Morris and Evergreen Park scored 73 and 1 team points respectively.

Peterson Prep Invitational

Kaneland boys track team scored sixth place overall at the Peterson Prep Invitational, held at Kaneland on Saturday, April 26, 1997. Top five scoring teams were West Aurora, Luther South, Dundee-Crown, Sycamore and Benet Academy, accumulating 92, 60, 42, 42, and 40 team points respectively.

Kaneland earned two places in the Pole Vault - 1st (Keifer - 13'3") and 5th (Long - 11'6"); and a second place in the Triple Jump (Fleck - 41'8").

Other place finishes included:

400m Relay - 3rd (McKeown, Putzler, Schrader, Aspengren - 45.2);
110m High Hurdles - 4th (Fleck - 16.3);

Lemont, Westmont Meet

In a triangular meet with Lemont and Westmont High Schools, the boys track team scored a total of 127.5 team points earning them an unchallenged 1st place. Lemont and Westmont scored 30.5 and 28 points respectively.

In the field events, place finishers for the Knights included:

Competing against eight other high schools at the McHenry Relays, the Kaneland Knights boys track and field team placed second overall. Competing at the meet were the following teams (and corresponding team scores):

Hoffman Estates (67), Kaneland (56), Lake Forest (28), Wheeling (27), Dundee Crown (25), Rockford Boylan (21), Elk Grove (18), and McHenry (18).

First place relay finishes were:

Intermediate Hurdle Shuttle Relay - 1:08.3 (Bird, Overhaug, L. Peterson, Fleck),
High Hurdle Shuttle Relay - 1:10.5 (Bird, Overhaug, L. Peterson, Fleck),

In a triangular meet against Ridgewood and Elmwood Park, Kaneland boys placed first overall, earning 101 team points. Elmwood Park and Ridgewood placed second and third earning 48 and 25 points respectively.

Competing against 14 area schools in the Kane County Meet, the boys track and field team placed fourth overall. Competing schools and their corresponding team points were:

West Aurora (130.3), St. Charles (128.3), Batavia (90.3), Kaneland (57), Dundee Crown (41), Aurora Central Catholic (34), Geneva (30), Elgin (12), Larkin (12), Marmion (8), Illinois Math and Science Academy (8), Streamwood (7), St. Edward (0), and Aurora East (0).

Scoring points in the field events for Kaneland were:
