In the 1997 IHSA Richmond-Burton Sectional Meet, the following Kaneland Boys Track and Field individuals and relays qualified to compete at the IHSA State Track and Field Meet, held in Charleston, Illinois. In order to qualify for state competition, place finishers were required to place either first or second in their respective event, or perform at a qualifying time or distance (as defined by the IHSA).
Long Jump - P.J. Fleck (2nd - 20' 4");
Intermediate Hurdles - P.J. Fleck (2nd - 41.2);
Pole Vault - Kurt Long (12' 6") and Marty Kiefer (12' 6");
Triple Jump - P.J. Fleck (2nd - 41' 0.25");
400m Relay - Dan Kenny, Bill McKeown, Kyle Schrader, Paul Aspengren (1st - :44.2);
100m Dash - Bill McKeown (11.2) and Paul Aspengren (11.2);
800m Run - Joe Reynolds (2nd - 2:02.8);
800m Relay - Luke Putzler, Shaun Kramer, Bill McKeown, Paul Aspengren (2nd-1:32.9);
400m Dash - Dan Kenny (2nd - :52.2);
1600m Run - Tim Eickhoff (2nd - 4:36.2); and
1600m Relay - Joe Reynolds, Dan Kenny, Luke Putzler, Shaun Kramer (1st - 3:28.6).
Additional team members will be selected to participate in the state meet as alternates in the relay events.
In the first track meet of of the year for the boys, Kaneland took 6th place in a 12 team field at the Byron Invitational.
Junior Marty Keifer won the pole vault at 12'6", with sophomore Kurt Long second at 12 feet even. In the 1600-meter relay, Bill McKeown, Shaun Kramer, Joe Reynolds and Paul Aspergren came in second with an impressive 3:50.3. Kaneland also took third in the 800-meter relay and forth in the 3200-meter.
The dual meet with Oregon was canceled due to winter-like weather conditions.
The Stagg Invitational was canceled due to freezing weather conditions.
The Knights scored 106 points to easily defeat Rockford Christian Life (62) and Yorkville (18). Ten first place finshes were awarded for the following events:

In the third annual Knight Relays, Kaneland boys placed in the top five for all eighteen events.
Eleven first place finshes were awarded for the following events:

Class 1600 Meter Relay - 3:39.7 (Schmidt, Miller, Kramer, Putzler);

Varsity 400 Meter Relay - 46.2 (McKeown, Reuland, Schrader, Aspengren);

Two second place finishes were earned:
3200 Meter Relay - 8:47.3 (Pulford, Reynolds, Eickhoff, Banholzer), and
Weightman Relay - :26.5 (Needham, Capella, Pozen, Frederick).
Two third place finishes were tallied for the following events:
6400 Meter Relay - time not available (Pulford, Morris, Eickhoff, S. Peterson) and
High Jump - 22' (Keifer, Hardy, Miller, Schrader).
Fourth place finishes were scored for the two eight events:
Shot Put - 142'9.5" (Capella, Pozen, Frederick, Staker) and
Discus - 378'5" (Capella, Needham, Frederick, Staker).
Fifth place was earned in one event:
Frosh Sprint Medley - 1:54.6 (Gibbons, Baert, Heidelmeier, Schmidt).
NOTE: No team awards were calculated for the Knight Relays.
Kaneland boys track team scored an impressive 109 team points in a triangular meet with Morris and Evergreen Park. Morris and Evergreen Park scored 73 and 1 team points respectively.

Meet was canceled.
Kaneland boys track team scored sixth place overall at the Peterson Prep Invitational, held at Kaneland on Saturday, April 26, 1997. Top five scoring teams were West Aurora, Luther South, Dundee-Crown, Sycamore and Benet Academy, accumulating 92, 60, 42, 42, and 40 team points respectively.
Kaneland earned two places in the Pole Vault - 1st (Keifer - 13'3") and 5th (Long - 11'6"); and a second place in the Triple Jump (Fleck - 41'8").
Other place finishes included:
400m Relay - 3rd (McKeown, Putzler, Schrader, Aspengren - 45.2);
110m High Hurdles - 4th (Fleck - 16.3);
800m Relay - 4th (McKeown, Aspengren, Schrader, Kramer - 135.7);
Intermediate Hurdles - 5th (Fleck - 42.0); and
1600m Relay - 5th (Putzler, Kenny, Fleck, Reynolds - 3:33.5).
In a triangular meet with Lemont and Westmont High Schools, the boys track team scored a total of 127.5 team points earning them an unchallenged 1st place. Lemont and Westmont scored 30.5 and 28 points respectively.
In the field events, place finishers for the Knights included:

Discus - 2nd (Frederick) and 4th (Pozen);
High Jump - 1st (Keifer - 5'8"), 2nd (Miller), 3rd (Hardy), and 4th (Schrader);

Pole Vault - 1st (Keifer - 13'9"), 2nd (Long), and 4th (Weydert); and
Long Jump - 2nd (Fleck) and 3rd (McKeown).

Competing against eight other high schools at the McHenry Relays, the Kaneland Knights boys track and field team placed second overall. Competing at the meet were the following teams (and corresponding team scores):
Hoffman Estates (67), Kaneland (56), Lake Forest (28), Wheeling (27), Dundee Crown (25), Rockford Boylan (21), Elk Grove (18), and McHenry (18).

In a triangular meet against Ridgewood and Elmwood Park, Kaneland boys placed first overall, earning 101 team points. Elmwood Park and Ridgewood placed second and third earning 48 and 25 points respectively.
