Knights Hit the Big three-0

The Kaneland Knights continued to roll as they won their 30th game in a row beating the Spartans from Sycamore 28-14. Sycamore who had hopes of going deep into the playoffs this year proved to be quality team, but in the end the Knights lines finally took control killing any hope the Spartans had to get back into the game.

Sycamore who's offensive and defensive lines are much smaller than Kaneland's played the mighty Knight lines to a stalemate in the first half.

Kaneland had the ball only once in the first quarter and that was all it took to grab the lead 7-0. It was a lead they never lost. Their one and only drive went 88 yards in 12 plays capped by a 2-yard quarterback keeper by Dave Issel for the score.

The next time Sycamore had the ball they scored too when quarterback Josh Evans rolled out from his own 44 yard line and sweep past the Kaneland defense netting 56 yards. The extra point kick failed and the Knights had precarious 1-point lead 7-6 with 11 minutes to play in the opening half.

On their next possession the Knights fumbled, but when they did get the ball back with 4 minutes to play they managed to drive 58 yards down field for a critical score with just 32.7 seconds left on the clock before half time.

The score came complements of Billy McKeown, who made the play of the night diving for a Issel pass in the endzone from 19 yards out. Josh Dimitri who was 4-for-4 on extra point kicks for the night gave the Knights a 14-6 half time cushion.

In the second half the Knights lineman decided they were going to kick it up a notch and controlled both lines of scrimmage.

The Knights did allow a Spartan touchdown in the second half but it was setup by an Issel Interception by Spartan Mike Lynch allowing Sycamore set-up shop just 24 yards from paydirt. Add an broken play 19-yard scamper by QB Evans and bingo the game was close again 14-12. Sycamore's 2-point conversion pass was incomplete, (why pass when you completed only 2 passes all night?) allowing the Knights to keep the lead.

In the final quarter the Knights finally opened up a 9 point cushion with a zig-zagging run by an Ben Rogers with 7:25 left in the game.

Then Tony Signorella recovered a Sycamore fumble giving the Knights an opportunity to close the door. From the Spartans 45 yard marker the Knights took 9 plays to put the game on ice with a Issel 16-yard run. With just a minute left it was over: 28-12.

Kaneland never punted in game.... Sycamore had just two pass completions in nine attempts...... Kaneland had 14 first downs to Sycamores 7........ both teams had only 3 penalties...... Kaneland had 364 total yards!...... Sycamore had 199 yards.

Dave Issel was 10-for-19 passing for 130 yards. He was also the Knights third leading rusher with 43 yards. Rogers had 102 yards rushing in 14 attempts and Colin Nolin added 81 yards in 11 attempts. Robbie Bieritz continued to impress with 4 receptions and only one drop. McKeown added 3 more catches.

Sophomore Game

The sophomores lost their first game of the season thanks largely in part to fact they couldn't hold on the ball. Fumbles cost the Knights dearly and with 2-minutes to play found themselves down 12-0.

With only 1:54 to play and with Sycamore driving down field all looked lost, when the Spartans fumbled the ball. Matt Schiff picked it up on his own 38 yard line and ran 62 yards for a touchdown. Kaneland surprisingly went for the 2-point conversion and fumbled before they got started to leave the score at 12-6.

The Knights then tried an on-sides kick and Schiff again recovered the bouncing ball, this time at mid-field, giving the Knights a chance to win the game.

But, (and yes there is a but), on third and 12 the Knights tried the old Hook and Ladder play with a pass to Joe Montanez who was near the first down marker when he lateraled. The ball bounced loose - Sycamore recovered - and that was the end of the game.
