Freshnmen Lady Knights Basketball

Kaneland 52 Riverside Brookfield 12

The Lady Knight's Freshmen opened up their season beating Riverside-Brookfield convincingly 52-12. The lady Knights lead 15-2 after one quarter and 32-5 at half time. Stephanie Schramer led the Knights with 16 points. Shari Wenz chipped in 12. Ana Miller, Lynda Gould, and Emily Kresse had 6 each.

Kaneland 43 Wheaton St Francis 31

The Knights led after one quarter, 14-8. Then outscored St. Francis by one in each of the remaining quarters for the 9 point victory. Shari Wenz led all scorers with 15. Stephanie Schramer added 13 for the Knights. Wenz had 10 rebounds and Emily Kresse had 7 more.

Kaneland 22 Glenbard South 21

The Lady Knights got off to a slow start handing Glenbard South a 6-2 first quarter lead. By half the score was only 9-8. Then the Knights held South scoreless in the third quarter for 14-9 third quarter Knights lead. Then hung on for a close 22-21 win. Shari Wenz had 8 points and Stephanie Schramer added 6. Lynda Gould had 10 boards and Emily Kresse had nine blocked shots.

Kaneland 28 Sycamore 7

The Lady Knights put the clamps on Sycamore, allowing them 2 points in the first quarter, 3 in second, 0 in the third and 2 in the fourth, in an awesome display of defense. Kaneland meanwhile was led by Kristi Reynolds and Shari Wenz with 6 points each. Stephanie Schramer added 5 and Ana Miller 4. Wenz had 8 boards and Miller had 6 steals.

Kaneland 22 Lisle 15

Kaneland continued their tough "D" as they held Lisle to 4, 4, 0, and 7 points in each respective quarter, as they went on the win 22-15. Kristi Reynolds led the Knights with 6 points. Shari Wenz added 5 points and 7 rebounds. Ana Miller and Stephanie Schramer added 4 points each.

Kaneland 31 Yorkville 24

The Lady Knights jump off to 11-3 first quarter lead and led 20-11 at halftime. But scored only 2 in the third quarter as the Foxes caught fire and closed the gap to 22-20 after three. The Lady Knights defense dug in and held Yorkville to 4 points in the last quarter to bring home the win. Shari Wenz led the Knights with 9 points, 11 rebounds, 5 steals and 2 assist. Emily Kresse had 6 points, 9 rebounds, and 6 blocked shots. Kristi Reynolds and Stephanie Schramer added 6 points each. Ana Miller sat out with an ankle injury.

Central Freshmen Tournament

Kaneland 34 DeKalb 33

The Lady Knights played a stubborn Dekalb team to the open The Central Freshmen Tournament. The game was close all the way as Kaneland held a slim 15-12 halftime lead. But no team led by more than then 6 points as the Dekalb kept fouling the Knights late in the game. DeKalb managed to score 5 points in the last 5 seconds to make the final score close. Stephanie Schramer led the Knights with 12 points (8 from the foul line). Shari Wenz added 10 more and Emily Kresse had 7 rebounds. Kristi Reynolds had 6 boards and 5 blocked shots.

Kaneland 24 Geveva 21

Kaneland jumped to a quick seven point leadafter one quarter, (8-1) and led 20-9 after three. But the Lady Knights let up and allowing Geneva to get within three points with three minutes to play. But a spirited effort at the end, kept the Knights undefeated. Shari Wenz led the Knights with 8 points 12 rebounds, 5 steals, and 2 assist. Kristi Reynolds and Stephanie Schramer had 4 points each and Brooke Schenk came off the bench to add three critical points.

Kaneland 38 Belvidere 30

The Lady Knights brought home a new trophy for the Kaneland trophy case as they played one of their most solid games of the year holding off a very tough Belvidere team to win the Central Freshmen Tournament 38-30. The Knights had built a comfortable 19-10 first half lead when everything fell apart for 8 minutes. By the time the third quarter of over Knights where clinging to a slim 25-24 lead.

In the fourth quarter the Lady Knights played some hard nose defense and finally broke Belvidere's tough full court press to take home the trophy. Shari Wenz led the Knights with 10 points (4 for 4 from the field and 2-3 from the line). Stephanie Schramer, Lynda Gould, Kristi Reynolds, and Emily Kresse had 6 points each in one of the best distribution of scoring all year.

With the win the Freshmen Lady Knights are following in the footsteps of their fellow Kaneland Football Knights by staying undefeated at 9-0 for the season and bringing home a new trophy.

Kaneland 39 Oswego 13

The Freshmen Lady Knights started 1998 the same way they left 1997 - by winning. This time it was Oswego as the Knights jumped off to 23-6 halftime lead and continued to dominate for a 39-13 win.

The Knights defense was so good that Oswego was never able to score more than 5 points in any quarter. The win also marked the return of Ana Miller who had missed the last 4 games with an ankle injury.

Shari Wenz led the Knights with 15 points, 8 rebounds and no turnovers. Emily Kresse had 9 points, 6 rebounds and a pair of blocked shots, while Stephanie Schramer added 7 points.

Kaneland 21 Batavia 17

The Freshmen Lady Knights playing without their coach and with an injured point guard Stephanie Schramer relied on their defense to keep their undefeated record intact, as they snuck by Batavia 21-17. The Knights got off to a very bad start scoring only 2 points in the first quarter. Batavia meanwhile built a 8-2 and 12-4 lead in the second quarter before the Knights turned up the defense and turned on the offense. From there the Knights outscored Batavia 17-5 for the rest of the game.

Emily Kresse led the Knights with 8 points, going 4 for 4 before fouling out. Shari Wenz added 6 more points and 7 steals, while Lynda Gould netted 5 points to go along with a team high 6 rebounds.

Kaneland 34 Geneva 26 OT

The Lady Knights fell behind early 8-0, then 12-4 and 17-10 by the middle of the third period. But knowing the their perfect record was on the line the Knights played in-your-face defense and held Geneva (who had only 2 previous losses - one to Kaneland), to only 5 points in the last third of the game, slowing working their way back. Then with just 26 seconds left, Shari Wenz hit a short jumper to tie the game at 22 all, forcing an overtime.

With 1:01 left in OT Wenz hit another jumper to put the Knights ahead for the first time 28-26 and they went on to win 34-26. Stephaine Schramer was 6 for 6 from the line in OT while Ana Miller added the other 4 OT points. Schramer led the Knights with 10 points for the game, Wenz had 8 and 12 rebounds, and Miller had 7 points and 5 steals. Lynda Gould had 10 rebounds and Emily Kresse added 5 points.

Kaneland 29 Hampshire 23

The Freshmen Lady Knights continued to live dangerously, trailing in the final quarter for the third game in a row, but turned to their "Refuse-to-Loss" attitude to pull out yet another victory against Hampshire 29-23. But it wasn't easy as they trailed (for the first time in the game), 22-21 with 3:30 minutes left in the game. That's when Emily Kresse came to rescue and scored back-to-back field goals, leading to a 8-1 final run. The Knights clamped down on the defense and their undefeated record remained intact, 13-0.

Kresse led the Knights with 11 points and 6 boards. Ana Miller added 7 points (all in the first quarter) and 6 steals. Shari Wenz had 5 points and 8 rebounds.

After the game Coach LeaAnn Machias Brei said "After this (third tough game in a row), I think I'm just going to sit on the bench and crash."
